Phnom Penh, Cambodia: The UNFPA Cambodia is organizing “The Power of Young People (PoYP) – Youth Champion Awards” on July 30, 2016 at Imperial Garden Villa and Hotel. Organized around a panel discussion on “Empower youth, boost their knowledge of sexual and reproductive health: How & why?”, the event serves as a platform for young people to meet inspirational advocates of youth’s development, discuss and share their visions.

“Sexual and reproductive health is sometimes considered a taboo subject among Cambodians, but young people can fully fulfill their potential only if they make an informed and responsible choice for their sexual health,” said Dr. Marc Derveeuw, Country Representative of the UNFPA Cambodia.

The event is organized with the aim to raise youth’s awareness of the importance of sexual and reproductive health knowledge and allow them to discuss the topic with the panelists. Speakers of the session are the previous PoYP Youth Champions who have been advocating for youth’s sexual and reproductive knowledge and rights.

The panelists include Mr. Kim Sanh, Advisor of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, Ms. Sarita Reth, Love9 TV Presenter, Mr. Tong Soprach, Public Health Consultant & Columnist and Mr. Srun Srorn, Founder of CamASEAN Youth’s Future Group & LGBTI Activist. On the occasion, the UNFPA Cambodia will also introduce the two new PoYP Youth Champions: Professor Tung Rathavy, Director of the National Center for Maternal and Child Health Center and Ms. Neang Sovathana (DJ Nana), Radio & TV host.

The Power of Young People – Youth Champion Awards campaign was launched in 2015 with the aim to acknowledge and honor the commitment of any individual who has been vocal and supportive in youth’s sexual and reproductive health knowledge and rights, gender equality and prevention against gender-based violence. The campaign has received 5K likes on Facebook since its inception.
